About school

Gymnasium Topolcany was founded in 1936. The school building has a favourable location since it is situated in the pleasant surroundings of the town centre. At present the school allows to educate up to 600 students.

Our school provides students with general education, offering a large selection of optional subjects. We cooperate with Slovak and foreign universities - we organize field trips and meetings with real experts. Students led by their teachers take part in various science, language or sports competitions and win student awards in Slovakia as well as abroad.

The interior of the school offers students 4 relaxation zones - a zone of natural sciences with an aquarium and a vertical garden, a zone of social sciences, a historical and a sports zone – which can be used for relax and learning.  

The school premises have many facilities including laboratories for teaching and learning Biology, Chemistry and Physics and specialist classrooms for teaching and learning Computer Studies, Mathematics, Geography, Slovak language and Foreign languages. Students learn English, German, Russian and French languages. The newly-restored school library also offers a friendly atmosphere for students' learning.

Students can practise various sports activities in two indoor gyms, the fitness gym, the outdoor multi-purpose sports field and in the school garden. Annually we organize swimming and skiing courses for our students. Within the implementation of a project funded by Norway Grants our school cooperates with a partnership school Råholt ungdomsskole in Norway. We also have a long-term cooperation partnership with Gymnazium in Otrokovice (The Czech Republic) which is aimed at the exchange of experience and organizing cultural events and sports activities.

For our students there is a wide selection of after-school activities to choose from, too. The after-school activities include natural science, foreign language, sports and journalistic activities. Thanks to the project ´Kvalitné vzdelávanie – cestovný lístok do budúcnosti´, our school offers students extra-curricular activities to support their talent and improve their school results. The aim of the project is to improve reading, scientific, mathematic and financial literacy of the students. We also offer complimentary forms of education and activities such as school, district or regional field competitions, project days on various topics, a matriculation of students, a prom and various cultural events with the support of our three pedagogy assistants.

Our school participates in several projects funded by various donor organizations, such as ´Kvalitné vzdelávanie – cestovný lístok do lepšej budúcnosti (Quality education – a travel pass to better future - funded by ESF), Pomáhajúce profesie v edukácii detí a žiakov (Contact and helping professions in education of children), Roots and Shoots (funded by Green Foundation), Spoločne vzájomným porozumením k ľudskosti (With mutual understanding to humanity – funded by The Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic), Financie pod kontrolou alebo dvakrát meraj a raz strihaj (Finances under Control or Look Before You Leap - funded by The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic).  We also carry out projects like Vzdelávací projekt o holokauste (The Holocaust Project), Záložka do knihy spája školy (The Bookmarker connects schools) and Projekt sebadôvery CHIPS – Childline in Parnership with schools (peer support aimed at developing peer relationships and prevention of socio-pathological phenomena in school environment).

Our school provides education to students with various learning disabilities for whom Individual Education Plans have also been worked out. The school has an accessible building entrance with a ramp for physically disabled students, too.

All students in need are provided with help and support of the school psychologist, a social pedagogue and Pedagogical and Psychological Counselling Centre.

Most of our students continue to study at universities in Slovakia as well as abroad.
